I don’t need manufactured frights tonight. There’s been enough real life monstrous behaviour lurking about lately.
But it’s easy to get into the spooky spirit when you remember this day is all about the kids.
And the sugar high. Read more on the exact Halloween candy exchange rate here.
And let’s not forget the scariest movies. My pick for this weekend has to be the super creepy Nightcrawler. As I reported here during this year’s TIFF blitz, this film grabbed me from the opening frames and never let go. Jake Gyllenhaal has created a perverse new screen classic in his portrayal of a petty thief turned overnight news cameraman, crawling about the urban landscape looking for gruesome accidents. He then takes whatever visuals he is able to film and sells them to a local TV news director ( here played to sleazy perfection by Rene Russo) who eggs him on further…This may or may not be the week to hit audiences with a black comedy about media practices but it’s one hell of a ride. The sleaze oozes but never enough to drench dramatic tension-as a thriller, it works beautifully. So, if you’re like me, and need a little adrenaline with your shot of satire, forget all the usual horror fare…this one’s got plenty.
Happy Haunting!!
